The project will focus on revitalising Athlone Castle to provide a more enhanced visitor experience. Works will include significant upgrades to ageing utilities and mechanical systems, a reconfiguration of visitor centre layout and interpretation, and enhancements to the courtyard, reception and retail areas. The anticipated reopening is Autumn 2026, although this date is subject to confirmation.

- [Athlone Castle's Historical Garden Exhibition](https://www.athlonecastle.ie/athlone-castle-s-historical-garden-exhibition/): The Historical Garden at Athlone Castle is like stepping back in time, featuring plants that would have grown in castle gardens during the Middle Ages. Medieval gardens were full of herbs, flowers, fruit trees, and bushes. Many of these plants were edible or used in cooking, while others had medicinal purposes or were used for making dyes and inks. This variety shows how military castles, like Athlone Castle, were largely self-sufficient.

- [Evangelist Slab (Early Christian)](https://www.athlonecastle.ie/evangelist-slab-early-christian/): This sandstone slab of which the bottom half is missing, bears an elaborate ringed cross that is decorated with spirals and interlace. A unique feature is the depiction of the evangelists St. Mark and St. Luke on either side of the ring.
- [John Waple armorial plaque (1621)](https://www.athlonecastle.ie/john-waple-armorial-plaque-1621/): John Waple was a merchant in Jacobean Athlone. This plaque bears a coat of arms and the inscription 1621 ERECTED BY JOHN WAPLE MARCHANT. The implication was that Waple had been granted arms as a testament to his status and wealth. This would have helped to underpin his commercial reliability. This plaque was recovered from an external wall in Custume Place, the probable location of his business.  
- [North Gate lock and key (1613)](https://www.athlonecastle.ie/north-gate-lock-and-key-1613/): This massive iron padlock and key were used to secure the North Gate. Its face is inscribed with its date of 1613, which is shown in Roman numerals. The gatehouse was located at the junction of North Gate Street and Lucas Lane. Built in 1578, it was demolished in 1840.

The keystone includes a medieval head. The haunch stones carry the curious couplet: ‘O may not Satan’s agents enter/Will O’Wisp and Jack the Printer’. A local man named Booth was responsible for the inscription, which arose from a property dispute he had in Athlone with William Sproule, a local merchant and John Potts, a colourful newspaper proprietor, who died in 1795 following a horse-whipping in Dublin by a rival journalist.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
