Guided Tour of Athlone Castle and Historical Garden
Discover the story of Athlone Castle on a tour led by one of the expert guides. Learn about the heroes and villains who have shaped the history of the castle and town for more than eight centuries.
This tour includes a visit to the newest addition to the visitor centre, the Historical Garden and Wildflower Meadow. This garden was inspired by the castle gardens of the Middle Ages and features native species of herbs, flowers, berries, and vegetables.
This event at Athlone Castle, County Westmeath is supported by the Heritage Council under the Irish Walled Towns Network 2025 Interpretation Fund.
This event is included as part of the admission fee to Athlone Castle. Places are limited, and pre-booking is required.

Athlone Castle was first built to defend the crossing point on the River Shannon and evolved into a bold defensive structure over the centuries. Elements of the original castle can still be seen today.
