To ensure the health and safety of our visitors and team members, specific Covid-19 training has been carried out with all our employees and Athlone Castle Visitor Centre and its team has been awarded the Fáilte Ireland COVID-19 Safety Charter. We are committed to fully comply with all government and HSE guidelines to ensure the safety of our visitors.

  • Timed, controlled entry in limited numbers applies to ensure a safe capacity is maintained. We strongly recommend all visitors to book online in advance to ensure entry at your preferred time and date. For visitors who do not purchase tickets in advance please be advised that we will be taking contact details for contact tracing purposes on entry to the castle visitor centre
  • We endeavour to minimise time spent in queues and at reception by asking you to purchase tickets in advance of arrival. For visitors who do not purchase tickets in advance please be advised that we will be taking contact details for contact tracing purposes on entry to the castle visitor centre
  • We ask all visitors to adhere to the social distancing advice and keep a minimum of 2metres apart. We kindly ask all visitors to be considerate and patient with other visitors and our staff in this regard while visiting our museum.
  • We have introduced a one-way flow system where practicable for your visit to the Athlone Castle Visitor Centre.
  • Sanitising stations are widely available, at entry, at our ticket desk, in our galleries, in our gift shop, and on exit.
  • Athlone Castle has rigorous cleaning procedures as standard throughout. As an extra precaution, we have introduced enhanced cleaning and sanitisation protocols throughout all public areas and back of house.
  • Visitors are required to wear face masks as per Government Directive effective from 10th August 2020.
  • Our highly trained Visitor Team will be on hand at all times to ensure visitors are informed, safe and comfortable during their visit with us.
  • We will endeavour to ensure that appropriate social distancing rules are maintained throughout the Visitor Centre.
  • We respectfully request visitors to use electronic payment where possible.
  • We reserve the right to refuse permission inside the Visitor Centre if a visitor presents with Covid-19 symptoms.
  • While the touchscreens will be cleaned regularly throughout the day, we need you to sanitise before using them also.
  • We will continue to provide audio guides free of charge available in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese. The audio guides will be systematically disinfected after each use.
  • Please make sure to remember to bring your own headphones with you if you intend to use our audio guides during your visit as they will not be supplied for hygiene reasons. Click here to view our Audio Guides Sanitising Procedure.
  • Management reserve the right to update and alter these operational measures at any time and without notice.

Contact Tracing

To help to ensure a safe controlled environment for our visitors, Athlone Castle Visitor Centre will be adhering to all Government Guidelines and visitors will be required to supply

details for contact tracing purposes on entry. During the registration process, you will also be asked for certain mandatory

contact information, including your name and contact number. You may opt to fill in other information (such as your email address

should you wish if you wish to receive news and events from Athlone Castle) but this is entirely at your own discretion.

In the event of an outbreak of COVID-19 in Athlone Castle Visitor Centre, the castle is obliged, under HSE guidelines, to share

the following information with the HSE for contact tracing purposes:

  • Your name
  • The number of guests in your party
  • A telephone number
  • The date of your visit

This information may be shared with the HSE for up to 30 days following your visit. Please note that no other information will be shared by the Gallery with the HSE. Please note that if you do not provide us with the personal data listed above we will not be able to allow you to attend our buildings in person.
