Group Tours are very welcome at Athlone Castle. We have provided guidelines below to help you plan your visit.
SELF-GUIDED TOUR
Your group will enjoy a self-guided visit of Athlone Castle Visitor Centre including the castle keep and castle grounds.
Group visitors will receive a guided introduction on arrival before you explore the visitor centre and interact and engage with the spaces at your own pace.
Complimentary audio guides are available on request in 7 languages.

SCHOOL TOURS
Choose between a Self-Guided or a Guided Tour.
Self-guided school tours will receive a guided introduction on arrival and maybe be divided into smaller groups to enjoy exploring the visitor centre, castle keep and courtyard under the supervision of teachers.
The Guided School Tour is tailored to suit the age group of your class. With prior notice, tours can focus on a particular part of the exhibition such as, Early Settlement in Athlone, Medieval Athlone and Athlone Besieged or students can enjoy a guided tour of all the exhibitions and artefacts on display. Our guides will encourage your school group to engage with the spaces, dress up and ensure they experience all the exhibitions while providing stories about the history of the town, castle and people of Athlone.

Before you visit
When planning your trip, don’t forget that the only way to enter Athlone Castle is by a relatively steep ramp which was created to keep attackers out. Once you are in the courtyard, the grounds and Visitor Centre are easy to get around and we have a lift in the visitor centre.
