Documenting Athlone Castle’s Collection: Free Workshop for Adults

Athlone Castle is hosting a free hands-on collection cataloguing workshop.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn about museum collections, heritage preservation and the work involved in protecting cultural heritage.

Participants will gain behind-the-scenes experience of museum work, learn how to safely handle museum artefacts, complete a condition check, and follow the steps involved in creating a catalogue entry. They will assist the Athlone Castle team in measuring and photographing objects and contributing to the final documentation stage of the objects. The completed records will then be added to Athlone Castle’s digital catalogue and made accessible online.

Through these workshops, Athlone Castle aims to raise awareness of the care, responsibility, and expertise involved in preserving museum collections, while also encouraging the public to explore Athlone Castle’s digital collection and other local, national, and international collections available online.

This Heritage Week event, organised by Athlone Castle, County Westmeath, is supported by the Heritage Council under the Heritage Stewardship Fund 2026.
