Join us for a special outdoor screening at Athlone Castle, where we’ll watch The Battle of Ballinamuck unfold under the stars!
The Battle of Ballinamuck is a documentary film about the 1798 Rebellion, the town of Ballinamuck, and its people who bravely fought British forces. Produced as part of the 225th anniversary commemorations, the film includes interviews with prominent historians such as Kevin Whelan, Dr Ida Milne, Mel Farrell, and Paddy Cullivan and large-scale recreations of the battle itself. The film was produced by award-winning film production company Harp Media (Lakelands).

Athlone Castle was first built to defend the crossing point on the River Shannon and evolved into a bold defensive structure over the centuries. Elements of the original castle can still be seen today.
We tell the story of settlement in this part of Ireland’s Ancient East, from the Neolithic period through Viking, and Medieval ages to modern life in Athlone.
