Athlone Castle Visitor Centre will once again deliver an exciting and engaging programme of events during National Heritage Week 2023 in collaboration with a broad selection of specialist heritage experts, facilitators, artisans and historians and supported by the Heritage Council under the Irish Walled Towns Network 2023 Interpretation Fund.
Athlone Castle Visitor Centre is creating a record of the social history of the families who resided in Athlone Castle, that will form the basis of a temporary exhibition, entitled ‘Stories from Athlone Castle’ during this year’s Heritage Week in August. This oral history project will begin in June 2023 and culminate in an exhibition as part of an extensive programme of events celebrating Heritage Week from 12th to 20th August. ‘Stories from Athlone Castle’ project is supported by the Heritage Council under the IWTN Heritage Interpretation and Events Grants 2023.
Athlone Castle Visitor Centre is delighted to announce a temporary addition to our display- the Westmeath tapestry, one of the five tapestries that form the “Threading the Táin” project.

Athlone Castle will be closed from Wednesday 21st to Tuesday 27th December inclusive and will re-open on Wednesday 28th December 2022 through until Sunday 1st January 2023. Normal Opening Hours resume from Wednesday 4th January 2023.

Sleigh bells will be ringing loudly over Athlone Castle on Saturday 17th December as Santa and his trusted elves will be on site for a very special day to meet the boys and girls from the town of Athlone and surrounding areas. Children and their parents will be greeted by Santa’s elves and will be guided through a Christmas wonderland with fun activities and Christmas themed arts and crafts where they will make Christmas ornaments and stockings to take home or to place on the Christmas tree in Athlone Castle.
Athlone Castle, Luan Gallery and Abbey Road Artists’ Studios will once again open their doors to welcome those interested in exploring arts and heritage sites this Culture Night which takes place on Friday 23rd September.
