Aubrey Thomas de Vere was born on the 10th January 1814, at Curraghchase House, Kilcornan in County Limerick. De Vere was the son of poet Sir Aubrey de Vere.

Athlone Castle Visitor Centre will close from Thursday 24th to Monday 28th December inclusive. Athlone Castle will re-open on Tuesday 29th December. Athlone Castle will close on Friday 1st January. Normal opening hours will resume from 2nd January.

National Heritage Week runs from the Saturday 15th to Sunday 23rd August, and accordingly, the team at Athlone Castle has programmed numerous exciting events throughout the week, catered to suit all ages!

The Siege Exhibition Space Closed from today until Sunday 15th December 2019
Visitors are asked to please note that there will be no access to The Siege exhibition space at Athlone Castle Visitor Centre from 12pm today Thursday 12th December until Sunday 15th December as Santa’s elves are busy preparing the space for his and Mrs Claus’ arrival at the weekend.

National Heritage Week runs from the 17th to 25th of August, and accordingly, the team at Athlone Castle has programmed numerous exciting events throughout the week, catered to suit all ages!
Athlone Castle Medieval Fair 2019
Athlone Castle will host its seventh annual Medieval Fair on the 31st August and 1st September 2019. The fair takes place in collaboration with the Society for Creative Anachronism and this year will run in conjunction with the Athlone River Festival. The Athlone Castle Medieval Fair is supported by the Heritage Council and the fair is a celebration of living history, customs, pastimes, lifestyle and entertainment.
